Why your joints feel stiff first thing — and what actually helps

If you wake up feeling like the Tin Man before you've had your tea, you're not alone — stiffness after rest is one of the most common joint complaints, especially with age or arthritis.

What's actually happening

Overnight, the fluid that lubricates your joints (synovial fluid) settles and cartilage gets less blood flow while you're still, which is why things feel "gummed up" until you move around. This is normal and usually eases within about 30 minutes of getting up if it's ordinary wear-and-tear stiffness.

When stiffness means something more specific

Not all morning stiffness is the same, and how long it lasts is actually a useful clue:

  • Osteoarthritis stiffness (the "wear and tear" type affecting knees, hips, feet) tends to ease within 30 minutes of moving.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis stiffness (an autoimmune type affecting hands, feet, wrists first) often lasts much longer than 30 minutes and comes with swelling in the small joints.

  • Gout causes sudden, severe pain and heat, usually in the big toe, rather than gradual stiffness.

  • Ankylosing spondylitis causes lower back stiffness that lingers longer than a normal bad back.

Why joints wear down in the first place

Cartilage is the smooth cushioning between bones; as it thins with age, injury, or repeated strain, bones can start rubbing together, which is what drives osteoarthritis pain and stiffness over time. Excess body weight adds direct mechanical strain to weight-bearing joints like knees and hips, speeding this process up. Family history, previous joint injuries (old sports injuries count), age, and sex (women are more prone to rheumatoid arthritis, men more prone to gout) all play a role too.

Simple things that help

  • Move gently as soon as you wake — ankle circles, knee bends, shoulder rolls before you even get out of bed

  • A warm shower loosens joints faster than sitting still

  • Low-impact movement through the day (swimming, walking, pilates, yoga) keeps joints happier long-term

  • Keep to a healthy weight — this directly reduces mechanical load on knees and hips

  • Avoid smoking and heavy drinking, both of which the NHS flags as worsening joint symptoms

When to actually see a doctor

See a GP if stiffness or pain doesn't ease after a few days, if one joint swells suddenly, or if it comes with fever. Most everyday morning stiffness is manageable with movement and lifestyle habits rather than a sign of something serious — but persistent hand or foot stiffness lasting well over 30 minutes is worth getting checked for rheumatoid arthritis.
